Description:
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program serves students
whose home language is other than English and who are limited
English-proficient (LEP) The ESL program assists English language
learners (ELL) in acquiring the communication skills necessary
to participate successfully in the mainstream classroom. Instruction
is designed to meet the needs of students at various levels of
English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
There are two types
of credit for the High School ESL Program.
(VO 1114) ESL
One and one-half elective credits per semester.
This is a semester or yearlong course for limited English proficient
(LEP) students who are functioning at English proficiency levels
1 through 4.
(V0 1115/V0 1116) EFL
1/ESL and (V0 1117/V0 1116) EFL 2
One foreign language credit and two elective credits per year.
These are year long courses for LEP students needing at least
two years of ESL. They fulfill the sequential elective and two
foreign language credits towards graduation.
